Which Version of Smaart Do I Need?

Which Version of Smaart Do I Need?

With multiple versions of Smaart available, you might be unsure which version is the best fit for your needs.  If so, read on for an overview of the differences between the versions and some considerations to help you decide which is the right choice.

To begin, measurement work in Smaart falls into three basic categories:

  1. Real-Time spectrum and transfer function measurements. Real-time measurements are commonly used by sound engineers to analyze sound system behavior and system-room interactions, tune and align PA systems, and visually monitor mix signals during the event.
  2. Impulse Response Impulse response measurements are commonly used by acousticians, integrators, and consultants to characterize the acoustical properties of an environment or the performance of an installed system, including reverberant decay times and speech intelligibility indicators.
  3. SPL measurements. SPL (Sound Pressure Level) measures the strength of sound waves in air and is a popular tool for mix engineers to ensure consistent levels over time as a type of “quality control” for the audience. SPL measurements are also used to monitor and characterize sound exposure and nuisance noise concerns, and to comply with sound level regulations.

If you want to perform measurement work that falls into all three categories:

Smaart v8 is the full-featured, multi-channel version of Smaart. It includes our full measurement toolsets for Real Time, Impulse Response and SPL measurements. Smaart v8 can access input signals from multiple IO devices, and there is no software-imposed limitation on the number input signals you can work with in the software simultaneously, or how many measurement engines you can run at once – as many as your computer and hardware can accommodate.

If you only need real-time measurement capabilities:

Smaart Di v2 is a stripped-down version of Smaart that offers the same Spectrum and Transfer Function measurement capabilities as Smaart v8, but it can only support a single I/O device, and two inputs at a time. It does not offer the Impulse Response mode acoustic analysis functions, or advanced SPL metering and logging functions. Smaart Di v2 is a great choice for system tuning (transfer function) work using a single microphone position at a time.

If you only need to measure, monitor, and log SPL:

Smaart SPL is a stand-alone SPL monitoring program that offers all of the advanced SPL toolset found in Smaart v8, contained in a streamlined, purpose-built interface that is simple and quick to navigate. Smaart SPL provides a cost-effective package for SPL monitoring, metering, and logging, and is a great choice for technicians, venue management, houses of worship, theaters, or anyone who wants to keep an eye on levels, sound exposure, and nuisance noise, but doesn’t require advanced acoustic system or signal analysis capability.

Is there a more detailed feature comparison?

Yep! Click here to view a comparison chart showing the key feature differences between the three versions of Smaart.

Can I upgrade later?

Yes, some users prefer to “start off small” with Smaart Di v2, and upgrade to a full Smaart v8 license as they expand into multi-channel measurement work. Di v2 licenses can be upgraded to v8 at any time via our online store, or by contacting us for more information.

Do you have Demo versions available?

Absolutely. We offer free 30-day demos for Smaart v8, Smaart Di v2 and Smaart SPL, so you can try before you buy and make sure the version you choose is the version you need. Click HERE for the demo download page.
